THE SYMMETRIC VINTAGE RESORT OUTTAKES & EXTRAS

Way back in January, Gillian and I decided it might be fun to attempt to shoot a capsule collection of vintage resort wear, since I was going to be in Barbados on a family trip.  So we pulled some dresses and jewelry, packed them into my suitcase, and I put my game face on.  Modelling (and I use that term loosely) is not exactly in my comfort zone.

But, two months later, we did manage to put together a dreamy little lookbook, which you can see on our site here! I know everyone else is showing next year’s Fall collections, although hell it still feels like deep winter up here and we’re nothing if not rule-breakers.  Rule-breakers!!  Or something like that.

The flora was so lush in Barbados that there was no shortage of great backdrops on which to shoot.  My husband Chris did  the photography while I attempted to style, art-direct, and smize all at the same time.  Neither of us will be quitting our day-jobs.  But it was fun to pretend.  My dear Gillian – your position as Symmetric model-in-residence is intact.

Here are some extras and outtakes from the shoot.

FIELD TRIPS: TIMOTHY OULTON

When my family visited Barbados at the end of January, I made sure to get some shots inside the Timothy Oulton showroom, thinking it could be a candidate for The Symmetric’s Field Trips series.  And somehow I drafted an entire post, then forgot to publish it.

I know that Timothy Oulton is a big name lifestyle retailer, but I always enjoy this particular shop and all its vintage displays.  In addition to their signature leather and industrial-meets-vintage pieces (the London-based company makes furniture for Restoration Hardware – from what I can tell, TO designed my current sofa, the Fulham), the two-storey shop features a wine cave and small Italian cafe that serves house-made pasta lunches.

A cool place to poke around amidst antique treasures and well-crafted reproductions.  Love that wall of dishes and… what can I say?  Kind of wish I was still there, wearing a sundress and sipping a soda.

POSTCARDS FROM THE EDGE

F*ck you, polar vortex. A few days ago we returned to your icy clutches, but we’ve got the tan-lines to prove that for 10 glorious days, we were free.

Our Barbados trip was by no means perfect (Theo got the stomach flu, and there were the usual complex dynamics at play when one vacations with one’s spouse, child, parents, sister and brother-in-law) but it sure was pretty.  I’ll let the photos do the talking…

I promise I’m not trying to make you insanely jealous, but there’s more…

CAN’T SEEM TO GET MY MIND OFF OF YOU

This morning Chris, Theo and I are escaping the big chill and heading to Barbados for a little sun, surf, and family time with my parents (who we’ll be meeting down there). I’m looking forward to tearing into some novels, and my dad can’t stop talking about taking Theo for walks on the beach to pick shells.  CANNOT. WAIT.

I’ve still got blog posts scheduled and Gillian will be here to keep the homestead safe (and take care of our dog). I see lots of duty-free rum in her future. You can keep up with us on Instagram where I’ll undoubtedly be posting a ton of bikini selfless (ha, no). See you soon! xx Shanan

NO PARTICULAR PLACE TO GO

I have zero in the way of exploratory travel plans on my radar at the moment, but I do enjoy imagining a night in any of these rentals via Air BnB.  Would you ever stay somewhere, er, unconventional?  I don’t know if my camp would go for it, ultimately, but these properties caught my eye…

Houseboat rental Amsterdam

Would you ever stay on a houseboat? One of my fondest childhood travel memories involves my parents renting a houseboat with another family… Picture all the Vacation movies rolled into one and set on water for a week.

I assure you that our rental did not resemble this one in any way.  Isn’t this amazing?

And finally, welcome to Crazytown (aka Pittsburgh).  I want to go to there, and get to know these people.

It looks a little more unassuming from the outside (save for the fact that it’s mirrored and all).

I’ve tended to play it pretty safe when it comes to accommodations, but I do feel lacking in the adventure department after seeing a glimpse of the possibilities out there.  Would you stay in any of these??
